Just a quick note on firing our drop rings.
First all they need is kilnwash. Be sure to get the drop inside edge and the entire surface. Just give it a good coat mixed 5/1. I use Bullseye wash. No need to dry or prefire.
I always set drops to start after midnight or later so that when I get to the studio in the morning I am at maybe 1100 and then I can really watch. There is nothing worse than having to watch a slow drop at night.
Next the schedule is determined by a few factors.
1. How close to the coils is your glass?
2. How thick is your glass?
3. How far a drop are you planning?
Your glass should be a minimum of 2” away from your top elements….but if that close you do need to go extra slow……if very thick even slower.
My suggestion would be for glass that is 3/8” or less that is close start at:
100/800 no hold
250/1225/3 hrs You are not actually going to hold 3 hours. After the glass gets to 1225 you need to check it every 10/15 min. You may need to extend that time as some glass drops can be very slow. take notes!!
After your glass touches the shelf give it a few more minutes to make a nice flat base. The taller it is the better the base needs to be to make it stable. From there it is personal taste on how you want your look it to be. When you are satisfied go to anneaL. You can flash open your kiln for a min or 2 to stop the progress then anneal and slow cool. close it by 1100 degrees.
One more thing. When deciding how big your glass should be…..I suggest making it as large as the ring. If you are going to cut off the rims you can use that rim glass again!! I like to have a 2” rim plus!!
