Dichroic and Texture Mold
I thought I would write a quick tutorial on how I did this piece as so many are asking.
This is some dichroic glass that is made by John Burgess. (SunsetDichroic@gmail.com) These come in 10" rounds. (90, 96, and float). After cutting off the clip marks they are around 9". Awesome quality!!!! Very easy to cut off clean. He does not have a website yet but will soon. Just email him for information about what is available. Please tell him I sent you!!!
First step is to cut your 2 large rounds of glass. I wanted a nice large rim of the cobalt. Cut one round of color one of clear. Clean well. Cut them as large as will fit on your texture mold leaving 1/2”.
Here I am using one of our texture molds…
Next step is to cover the mold with thinfire. I then trace the larger round with a black marker on the thinfire centered as well as possible..
Next I remove the large glass and place the dichro round centering it onto the drawn circle. I want the dichro to be perfectly centered and I am finding this is a good way.
Now I mist the dichro with clear powder for bubble control. (You can do this before placing it on the thinfire)
Now you can place the cobalt layer lining it exactly where you drew the lines on the thinfire. Now add a very fine mist of clear powder.
Next add the clear layer not disturbing the powder.
A good bubble squeeze schedule and it came out perfect. I am firing 96 and this is the schedule I used this:
250/800/0
350/1100/20
50/1225/20
1350/1440/15
9999/950/90
100/700/off
Very excited by these dichro disks and loving the size.
